I’ve written this song out of my experiences. When I first became a Christian I’d find myself in situations and interactions with people that left me feeling yucky, rejected and really awful (my fault as well as theirs). On one occasion I felt that the Lord suggested that I declare that He is Lord. So I did, in my mind I repeated the words “Jesus is Lord”. I found that all the yuckiness shifted and God’s peace came. I’ve done this for over ten years and I wanted to write a song to share with others.
The verse talks about how the Lord comforts my troubled heart and gives me peace. How He rescues me when I call out to Him. The chorus is full of declarations and truth that chase away the darkness and the bridge revels in the fact that Jesus’ light shines like a torch in my dark times.
Psalm 18 Verses 1 – 6
“I love You, O LORD, my strength.”
The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge;
My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised,
And I am saved from my enemies.
The cords of death encompassed me,
And the torrents of ungodliness terrified me.
The cords of Sheol surrounded me;
The snares of death confronted me.
In my distress I called upon the LORD,
And cried to my God for help;
He heard my voice out of His temple,
And my cry for help before Him came into His ears.
Psalm 18 Verses 18 – 19
They confronted me in the day of my calamity
But the LORD was my stay.
He brought me forth also into a broad place;
He rescued me, because He delighted in me.
